WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) proposed a new bill that would bypass federal barriers of marijuana research.

The goal of the proposed Expanding Cannabis Research and Information Act is to dive deeper into potential harms and benefits of marijuana in light of the recent marijuana bill Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker signed.

“We need better understanding of promising uses of cannabis for treatment, as well as how marijuana use impacts public safety and specific populations – including children, pregnant women, and driver,” Durbin said in a news release.

Under current federal legislation, marijuana is classified as a Scheduled I controlled substance, which means the Drug Enforcement Administration says it has no medical benefits. There’s also multiple steps researchers must follow to start a marijuana-based research project. Therefore, knowledge of the pros and cons of marijuana use is very small.

If the new act goes into effect, marijuana would be reclassified as a Schedule III controlled substance to further remove research barriers. A national cannabis research agenda will also be developed with a key focus on health impacts of marijuana use.
